Flower business as a trade has been around for a long time and with all the changes in technology, culture and fashion, flower industry has also gone through great changes also.I remember when sun flowers were on the shop display, maybe about 30 years ago,it was a big deal.Over the years not only I have enjoyed the flower calendar through the year as new flowers show up as time passes, there are also new flowers and varieties of the same flowers that are added on.IMAGINE HOW EXCITING THAT IS WHEN THE FLOWERS SHOW UP ON TIME AND ON SCHEDULE AND THEN SEEING NEW ONES!
New varieties of roses, lilies, mums and just about any flowers are created with the help of science, genetics and hybridization. Not all flowers in nature can be a cut flower and used in floral arrangements.Cut flowers used in floral shops need to have the kind of veins that can carry the water to the flower part through the stem.
With science so much is possible and so new varieties of flowers.
In the recent years with the open international trade rules, also massive amounts of flowers come from many countries in central america as well as europe, africa, east asia and middle east even.SO NO BORDERS!Flowers from everywhere and well the more the merrier.
A century ago and beyond,Julius and Fred Seulberger, dating back to late eighteen hundreds as growers/wholesalers and then in early nineteen hundreds as retailers were
the originators of Seulberger Florist in Oakland,Ca.Now they both rest in peace in Mountain view cemetery in Piedmont part of Oakland.
It is very touching for me as I google their names and read newspaper articles from so long ago about how they handled the flower business back then and find out about the flowers then and see how the flower business was back then.
I feel very proud to be a part of this legacy.
