Keeping cut flowers fresh and beautiful

Keeping cut flowers fresh and beautiful

Flower business "is not all roses".

As beautiful as flowers are, and as much fun to be around them, there are challenges to get the best ones.

They are perishable. They last longer in refrigeration, but too long in cold temperature and they lose quality, not open or not open as gracefuly.

Aside from freshness,it matters greatly, the genetics of the seed or bulb, the conditions of growing and the grower himself.

A higher grade flower, shows nicer shape, color and texture of the flower petals, nicer leaves and stems and they last longer.

Many flowers are grown in the fields but there is so much demand, that so many more are grown in "Green houses".

Generally Green house flowers have a higher quality as the conditions are controlled.

I have been going to SF flower mart for many years, where many growers, vendors and wholesalers and their employees work very hard,

long hours to keep the flowers looking beautiful, doing this for many years for the love of flower business.
